Preservation 101: Why Historic Buildings Matter and How to Preserve Them
Leading experts will guide you through the history, evolution, and craft of New England architecture and modern historic preservation, to deepen your appreciation for architectural design and provide practical tips for homeowners and history lovers.
ABOUT THE WORKSHOP: Staff from the Nye Museum in East Sandwich will share insights into past and current preservation initiatives for the 1678 Benjamin Nye Homestead, the 1889 Grange Hall, and the 1858 Nye Mill Museum, highlighting challenges and surprising discoveries.
ABOUT THE FACILITATOR: John Cullity is a historian, author, and Nye descendent who grew up in East Sandwich, and witnessed the preservation and restoration of the 1678 Benjamin Nye Homestead, an effort led by his mother Rosanna Cullity for the Nye Family of America Association. John began studying the Nye family and local history when he was a teenager, and joined the Nye Board of Directors in 1974. In 1987 he and his mother compiled A Sandwich Album as a fundraiser for the Association, and he later wrote a newspaper column, “The Cedarville Journal.” He has also done extensive work in land preservation, and has been president of the Sandwich Conservation Trust since 1985.
